Lombardi: Patriots Will Franchise Cassel

Seemed almost like a throwaway line in the show, but on ShowTime’s Inside the NFL this week, Mike Lombardi, former GM of the Raiders and Browns (where he worked with Bill Belichick) and currently of the National Football Post, had this to say on the future of Matt Cassel:

(Could Matt Cassel play for the Jets):

LOMBARDI: The Patriots are way too smart, and I’ve talked to people in the organization. They are going to franchise Matt Cassel. He’s an asset and they can control their ability to trade him if they franchise him.

What’s unclear is whether Lombardi was told directly by someone in the Patriots organization that Cassel will be franchise, or if that was his impression after speaking with someone inside the team. Still, he seems very certain that this is going to happen.

Cassel being franchised certainly wouldn’t be a surprise, but hear Lombardi say he talked to people inside the team and that this is what they’re going to do is a bit newsworthy.

  1. Bruce, we all know how the Patriots organization functions and they know Lombardi has a popular web site. To me this news doesn't fit how they would function unless they were using him to accomplish something.

The Pats make mistakes but they're unusual in that when they realize they've made one they quickly rectify it. Franchising Cassel is a huge gamble they'd have a hard time overcoming if they misjudge the QB market. IOW, I'm very skeptical.

  2. David Cyprian says:

Prediction: Next year, Cassel falls off a treadmill and goes on injured reserve during week two or three, and Peg Leg Brady steps in and leads the Pats to a 10-6 finish and the Superbowl where they lose to the Eagles who sack him like 11 times while Matt Light twiddles his thumbs. Also Peyton Manning goes 16-0 in the regular season but gets blown out 34-3 against the Chargers in thir first playoff game (Peg Leg Brady beats the Chargers 17 – 10 in the AFC championship game).
