To me this news doesn't fit how they would function unless they were using him to accomplish something. The Pats make mistakes but they're unusual in that when they realize they've made one they quickly rectify it. Franchising Cassel is a huge gamble they'd have a hard time overcoming if they misjudge the QB market. IOW, I'm very skeptical.
