Awesome stuff Tyler. I love the formation info. I'm sure you'll have even more insight when the bullets start flying for real, but one suggestion I have is to add some focus on the personnel groups along with the formations. Playing a "vanilla" defense is one thing, but if you've got 4 DBs playing against a spread with 3 WRs then there's going to be a hole somewhere matchupwise no matter how exotic the scheme is. These Pats teams have been great at staying out of those types of situtions, or turning them to their advantage, but that of course gets missed in realtime when announcers ...aw, I'm too tired to think of a good shot at that incredibly crappy NFLN crew. Makes me long for the days of Kermit the Gumbel with his sidekick the pez dispenser.

More to the current point, if the Pats did stick with the base 3-4 personnel there would be an argument that it wasn't just the multiple looks that confused them. There could also be some element of a slower LB having more cover responsibility on a quicker WR type than you'd expect during the regular season.

This post sucks. I need stoooorrrryyyyliiinnneesss.

Maybe next time instead of insightful commentary and analysis that is unmatched across the intertubes, you can complain about how little BB says in his press conferences.

Try again.

Madden 09 is great. They made huge improvements from 08. A lot of the "gamers" don't love it because they made it more realistic so you can't just run streaks, heave it up there and burn the DBs for a TD every time.

Great stuff - much better than all the hand-wringing and "first-one-to-sound-the-death-knell-of-a-once-great-franchise" competition going in the msm.

You guys and Mike Reiss are about the only things worth reading these days - thank you for existing.

Ha thanks fellas; if you have suggestions or see a mistake please give us some feedback. Jason I actually haven't tried '09 yet; how do you like it? We still have fun with '08 for the Wii whipping the remote around in Party Mode, etc. Have actually been playing Front Office Football a lot lately:

Awesome. I loved it. And like Nate mentioned, I think the links to the formations will be really helpful. I know all the formations but it really helps highlight the small differences that show up.

Hey Tyler, how are you liking Madden 09?

Just kidding, of course. Like Nate, I think I'm going to learn a lot from Tyler's column this year.
