Lou, I don't want to leave the impression that I personally think this is a reach, because I wouldn't know one if saw one.

I was referring to the fact that in most draft pubs and web sites, he was considered a second round pick, perhaps late first. So from that perspective, the 10th pick would be seen as a stretch, at least in some corners. In that sense it reminds me a little of the Mankins pick, when they made an unexpected choice (again, in the 'experts' eyes) considering where they were picking. This is even a greater degree of that.

"While Mayo proved that he has the field smarts to handle middle linebacker, he might lack the bulk to do so at the next level"

bulk doesn't matter so much to the pats in the 3-4, smarts do, it's not like Bruschi is a prototypical MLB .. and it's not like the Pats even play a MLB

doesn't seem like too much of a "reach' to me. The guy's stock has been rising. From Sports Illustrated.com>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Who is the fastest rising linebacker prospect?

Jerod Mayo, the SEC's leading tackler, has shot up the draft boards since his standout performance at the combine. After displaying 4.5 speed in the 40 and dazzling athleticism in positional drills, Mayo has vaulted past Dan Connors on several teams' boards.

Mayo is not regarded as simply a workout warrior by scouts. He is a tackling machine who possesses the instincts and awareness to become a force at middle or weak-side linebacker. That makes him an attractive option for a team looking for a combo-type linebacker. Look for him to come off the board in the middle of the first round.

I think a Turd Ferguson oversized yellow sheriff's hat would have been a nice touch for Goodell today. "See, it's an oversized hat. That's funny."
