Addition by Subtraction

If Ron Borges had been a 1950’s disk jockey instead of a modern day sportswriter, he would have critically praised Pat Boone’s version of ‘Tutti Fruitti’, muttered “if you knew what I know” about Little Richard, and defiantly denied there were paper bags full of cash stuffed in his bought and paid for pockets.

Good riddance to agenda-riddled “I’m inside and you’re not” bullshit. Long live young writers like Mike Reiss, Albert Breer and John Tomase, whose enthusiasm for the game, and limitless interest in it, serves all of us far greater than the “independant voice” ever did.

For a struggling industry, this is addition by subtraction. The newspaper business is a healthier one today.
