As draft week begins, let’s take a look at a few more noteable defensive prospects.

Jay Moore, DE, Nebraska – The Pats eyed Moore at the Nebraska pro day, and had a private session with him later. The mocks see him in the 40-70 range, so its very possible he’s gone by the start of day two. Sounds like a high effort guy with some pass rush ability, but doesn’t have top tier speed. There’s talk of a switch to 3-4 OLB. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Buster Davis, ILB, Florida State – An experienced, wildly productive football player who can do it all. Fast, instinctive, tough. Alas, Buster has a fatal flaw – he’s about as tall as Muggsy Bogues. I’ll go on record as saying who cares. One mock has Davis rising to the third round, but 90% say he’ll be on the board when the second day begins. I cannot see the wisdom in passing this guy up because of how tall he is. You gotta believe this would be a great second day ‘get’. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Tarell Brown, CB, Texas – He has all the physical tools and mental toughness to be a starting corner in the NFL, and can be an immediate contributor, say the profiles. Might be a steal as his draft stock fell while he played through a foot injury. Problem is, you have to wonder if he’s durable, and he’s had some off-field stuff (bit of a smoker, it turns out) that will send up the character flares. The Pats apparently did not contact him. A couple of mocks say he’ll come off the board at the end of the third round. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Jon Abbate, ILB, Wake Forest – A full-tilt overacheiver and solid, disciplined football player that was the center of his team’s defense. Isn’t considered all that athletic or agile. Not a coverage linebacker. Did not register on the mock board, though some think he could be a third rounder. Dead ringer for Mike Vrabel, by the way. Wasn’t enough to lead to any reported contact between the Pats and Abbate. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Earl Everett, OLB, Florida – Bill Belichick hooked up with Everett on his annual sojurn to Gainesville (you think by now Belichick would be a Tom Petty fan) this spring. The profiles say Everett is probably a better athlete than a football player at this point. Top shelf speed and range. Would have to develop awareness, which he has allegedly been slow to do. Josh Gattis, FS, Wake Forest – The mocks have Gattis coming off the board near the end of day one, where the Pats happen to have a pick. Three year starter, good size, speed, instincts and awareness. The profiles say, however, that he doesn’t tackle well or play as tough as they would like. But he has steadily improved throughout his career, meaning we can end this on an up note. Eric Weddle, SS, Utah – The safety-deficient Pats have had contact with Weddle this spring. Said to be a tough, energetic, versatile player on defense and special teams. Doesn’t appear have the kind of size, speed or athleticism that would set him apart. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Usuma Young, CB, Kent State – Late riser who the Pats visited twice, both at his pro day and and a later workout. Profiles rave about his intangibles, and he is said to have the pro level size, skills and versatility to play in the NFL and contribute, perhaps on special teams. May end up at safety. Desmond Bishop, ILB, California – The profiles say Bishop has the size and strength to be a situational run stopper. Always around the ball. But he’s slow and limited athletically. The Pats saw Bishop at the Combine, his pro day, and at a private workout. Considered a seventh rounder. NFL Draft Scout, NFL Draft Countdown, ESPN Insider Scouts, Inc.

Victor Albiamiri, DE, Notre Dame – When the profiles use the ‘Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane’ line on a guy, I close the browser and move on. The Pats did have some contact with Albiamiri at the Combine. Prototype build and a pretty good pass rusher, they say. Likely to be a first day pick according to the mocks.
